A Special Experience in My Life
A Special Experience in My Life
When I was in elementary school, I went to “Hsieh-ling” three times for each week. It was a children’s English cram school in Kaoshiung, which provided me lots of beautiful memories that it seemed to be the happiest time for me in the process of learning at that time.
“Hsieh-ling” was a place that once we stepped in, we could not speak in Chinese, and all the things that we talked about must totally in English. At first, I couldn’t involve in the group and I couldn’t express things very well, but through many practices and inputs in that environment, finally, I found it was not so difficult. I started to build up my self-confidence. Because of so, it was really a good environment for learning a language, and because of this rule, I could learn English in a natural and simply way. In some important holidays, they held some activities according to foreign cultures. For example, they had held some Christmas evening parties in the restaurant for Christmas Days and we had exchanged presents there for fun. Beside, they held a very funny party for Halloween in which we decorated the whole cram school to become a ghost house, and we dressed ourselves in many special clothes, such as witch, ghost, and so on. I enjoyed the process of learning in “Hsieh-ling”; as a result, I became more and more interested in English.
There, in “Hsieh-ling”, all of the teachers were foreigners coming from America or Canada; they all taught English in a lively way. Among those teachers, Tracy, one of the teachers who was coming from Canada and taught me in my class, was a nice teacher teaching us patiently and was very concerned about every student. To be her students, we had lots of homework and we had to listen to tape recorder again and again every day, but I regarded it as my interest and enjoyed it very much. We studied vocabularies, wrote sentences, read many stories, and sometimes played dramas. A few days before those important holidays, we would talk about the origin and stories of those holidays; moreover, we would sing songs that were related to them. We could not only learn English by joyfulness, but also understood foreign culture naturally – through Tracy’s teaching style.
The experience of learning English in “Hsieh-ling” really influenced me a lot. English became an important part of my life, and it brought me many special memories in my childhood. Again, I have to say, it was the happiest time for me in the process of learning. The children’s English cram school, “Hsieh-ling”, was a very special place for me; I will never forget the special experience there.
